Making Quilts With Vintage Linens

For decades I have collected vintage linens and fabric. Just how do you work them into a quilt? You can see some of the quilts I have made incorporating vintage elements.
I use sturdy linens such as tablecloths, napkins and tea towels for foundations to applique on. When items are damaged, I cut the usable parts into various sizes to be pieced into blocks. I added doilies and crochet work in the middle of the blocks in the blue and white quilt.
‘A Peaceful Past’ was the first quilt I made incorporating vintage embroidered linens. The border print set the color tone for the fabrics I used to complement the linens.
‘Vintage Tempo ‘and ‘Vintage Highlights’ (both sold) used simple square and rectangle layouts to let the vintage fabrics and linens shine.
‘Hankie Sue’ uses vintage hankies for the appliqued sun bonnet girls. Hankies make the dimensional outer border.
Some quilts I have for sale with vintage fabrics and linens in them are:
‘Hands All Around’ – A queen size quilt with gloves forming a central wreath around a rose encrusted doily. Vintage appliqued rose blocks form a border around the central design. It is very odd and quirky, and a great play on vintage.
‘Morning Glory’ features vintage embroidered blocks in a circular design. Such beautiful handwork deserved to be in a finished quilt.
‘Remember When’ has vintage items that span from 1890’s - 1950’s appliqued on brocades and other fancy fabrics. I kept the colors light and romantic and did custom quilting with lots of feathers.
‘Threads of Time’ mixes fabrics and linens from the depression era through the 1950’s with a blue colorway. I used the simple square and rectangle piecing to let the fabrics be the showcase.
‘Prim and Proper’ is a quilt I have been working on for a few years. The pictures show some of the blocks I have finished as well as vintage groupings that will become blocks.
