New Quilt Collection: A Closer Look
When I start on a quilt there are two main components that need to be decided on. Fabrics and pattern or design. Three of the quilts in tomorrow’s quilt launch use the same fabric collection: W. Morris, Art for All, and Harmony.
The fabrics I used in these quilts started with reproduction William Morris prints. William Morris was an English textile designer, poet, artist, writer and socialist activist associated with the British Arts and Crafts movement. He lived from 1834 - 1896. His motto was ‘Art for All’. Harmony was one of the key principles in his designs. I mixed a variety of these Arts and Crafts prints with fabrics from my stash. I had quite a large selection of fabrics pulled for this grouping.
The block patterns I chose to work with came from Moda Fabrics annual free quilt-along, Moda Blockheads 6. From May to November 2025 patterns were released weekly for a total of 24 blocks. I decided to make two of each block. The blocks are mostly 9’’ square with a few 18’’ and one larger block. As I neared the end of the sew-along I started designing quilt layouts. The abundance of blocks allowed me to make two featured quilts. I made extra blocks and connector units as needed. All three of these Morris quilts are samplers. Each has a different and unique setting.
W. Morris features the print “Strawberry Thief” which is used for the star points. This print is a classic and recognizable W. Morris design. The star anchors the quilt. The background is made up of blocks. A piano key border with a variety of prints is framed by a terracotta outer border to finishes the composition.
Art for All is based on a nine-patch setting. Five 18’’ blocks are alternated with groupings of four 9’’ blocks. A variety of borders surrounds this central setting. I used the terracotta print to create movement, anchor everything together and frame this art for the bed.
Once done with these king size tops which included their backing and binding, I still had fabric from the grouping as well as some extra units I had pieced. I decided I might have enough fabric to eke out one more quilt.
Harmony is a queen size sampler in a medallion setting which features three blocks: the nine-patch, rail fence, and flying geese. I used these blocks in a nine-patch setting for the center of the medallion. The borders alternate between solid fabrics and pieced borders that are made of the featured blocks. The layout has a classic and simple structure creating repetition and harmony.
