New Quilt On The Block: Gilded Tracks
Gilded Tracks is the latest quilt I have designed. About three months ago I posted a Reel of some Turkey Tracks blocks I started. They use raw edge fusible melon shapes. The blocks were inspired by an antique quilt.
I decided to do hand embroidery around the melon edges using the button hole stitch and metallic floss. Metallics are fragile, prone to shredding and breaking. I’ve been working diligently on the embroidery. The extra work has been worth the gilded sparkle that it adds to these colorful blocks.
This week I decided it was time to figure out what to make with these blocks. Gilded Tracks is going to be a two-block quilt with the blocks alternating in rows. The blocks finish at 15’’ square and have a simple sashing between them. A few borders will finish off the quilt.
I had 9 Turkey Tracks blocks and need 12. Thankfully I had a few more melon shapes that I was able to make into three more blocks. Next was selecting the second block. I chose the Wheel of Fortune. I need 13 blocks. This block has straight piecing that looks curved. A nice complement to the curves in the Turkey Tracks.
I pulled my Kaffe Fassett fabrics to use for the pieced blocks, sashing and borders. They are bright, bold, and make me happy. I am using a single neutral fabric as the background to anchor this lively mix.
After the center is pieced, I will make final decisions on the borders. I’m quite pleased with how this vibrant mix of colors and texture are coming together. Hope you like it too.
