New Quilt Update - 'Spinning Blues'

A patchwork quilt with blue and cream geometric patterns, featuring pinwheels, stripes, and florals, creating a cozy and intricate design.

Spinning Blues started with half square triangles which were made from the cut offs of stitch and flip seams from the quilt top “I’ve Got the Blues”. The pinwheels and leftover fabrics from the quilt have been made into two traditional blocks, a 9-patch and a 4-patch.

I added a narrow sashing around the pinwheel 9-patch blocks and then alternated them with the 4-patch blocks. Koko helped me with the trimming of blocks. Once the blocks were pieced, I was ready for the lay out and finishing stage.

I created movement in the quilt by placing similar colors diagonally across the setting. Once I settled on a layout that I liked I labeled the rows, stacked the blocks left to right and pinned the row together. Then I layered the rows on a tray that I could place next to my sewing machine.

Next, I moved into production sewing mode. I pieced the blocks into rows, letting the rows pile up until they were all sewn and ready to press. Once pressed it was back to the sewing machine and sewing the rows together.

After a final pressing, I measured the center and started playing with the remaining scraps to come up with border ideas. I added two narrower borders that alternated light and dark fabrics. The lengths are random which add to the scrappy look. I added a wider outer border to tie everything together and bring the final size up to a full/double quilt top.

The controlled color palette and simplistic blocks have created a gentle, classic, and elegant quilt that will fit into a variety of decors. I had a few extra blocks and was able to make a companion topper. My goal of using up what I had in this fabric grouping has been met and I have another quilt top ready to be quilted.
