Quilt Update: Happenstance
'Happenstance' describes an unexpected event that occurs purely by random chance rather than by design. I think this is the perfect word to describe how this quilt is coming together.
I finished the quilt ‘Gilded Tracks’ and had a small stack of Kaffe Fassett fabrics remaining. There were some half square triangles left over so I randomly set them together into three spinner blocks. I also had some other bits that I pieced into a star block. I set all of this aside to do something with it in the future.
I moved on to making samples for a strips and strings program I will be presenting soon. As I sorted through my strips I found Kaffe scraps that I put into their own pile. I decided I would make some of my samples using these scraps. Next thing I knew I had a number of stars blocks with strips and string star points.
There were a few circles in my Kaffe fabrics that I thought would work as the focus in a few blocks. More random playing with fabrics and my block count continued to grow.
I saw a block pattern on the internet, and I wondered if I had enough fabric left to make one. I was able to make two!
At this point I realized another quilt was emerging. The block sizes are all over the place. I started writing down what block sizes and types I had. Now what do I do with this mix? I’m down to a very few fabrics and some small strips. I cut fabric to make a few more blocks to match some of the block sizes I have. I will sew the small strips together for more string blocks.
Usually, my quilts are symmetrical and balanced. Not this one. I think I will go with a modern offset/random composition. I am still in the happenstance block stage. The final plan will emerge eventually.
