Travel Time Sewing Project
I am heading out for a two-week vacation. A hand sewing work project is an essential part of my packing. I pulled out a project I started on last year about this time. I am doing Erica Kaprow’s wool applique pattern “Everything’s Blooming”. There are 30 blocks and an outer border. The blocks finish at 8’’ square.
This is a long-term project. To make it not so overwhelming I am doing the blocks in groups of six. I completed the first six blocks the end of September last year and blocks 7-12 in April this year.
I have learned it is best not to leave packing my travel project to the last minute. I spent the afternoon getting all of my supplies ready. It took me three tries to find the right project totes…I finally got it down to two bags. One holds my wool sorted into color groups. My trusty busy bee bag holds everything else. I have gone through my stuff a couple of times. Getting down the road and realizing I have missed a crucial tool or item can be maddening.
There are many steps to making these blocks:
1. Tracing the pattern onto freezer paper.
2. Pressing the pattern onto the wool and cutting out the pieces.
3. Making a placement overlay from clear plastic.
4. Pinning the pieces onto the block fabric.
5. Appliqueing each piece with Matching thread.
6. Embroidering around each piece with two strands of floss.
7. A final pressing and trim to size.
My travel time project is packed and ready to go. All is right in my little world.
