Vintage Coverlet To Vintage Jacket

I was changing out my quilts and wall hangings from patriotic to summer. I have two vintage summer coverlets from the early 1900’s and wondered if one might fit on one of my beds.

Coverlets are light weight bed coverings that bridge the gap between a blanket and a quilt. My vintage coverlets are hand embroidered on a single layer of a white cotton fabric. One fit my full/double size bed and is from the 1930’s. The second one I have is for a twin-size bed and dates from the 1920’s. I decided that I might be able to make a lightweight jacket out of it.

I had fun doing a deep dive into my jacket patterns. In the end I chose a simple kimono style pattern in a size medium. I was able to get most of the embroidery incorporated into the jacket. There is a fold over front collar that gives a finished look. I chose a shorter length and narrowed the sleeve width to make it easy to wear while working.

A 100-year-old coverlet now has a new life as a jacket I will wear often. Hope you like it.
